Education Above All partners with Qatar University to support youth in Tunisia

Education Above All (EAA) foundation, through its programme Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) recently partnered with Qatar University (QU) to send 20 of its male students on a twelve-day volunteer mission to Tunisia, as part of its International Volunteer Trips programme.

The students travelled to Ain Draham city in north-western Tunisia, located in the Jendouba Governorate; a region rich in natural resources, but that suffers from high levels of poverty and unemployment, with higher dropout rates than the national average. National vocational training programmes designed to respond to the needs of dropouts fall short of meeting the needs of young people in that area, where both literacy and job readiness are generally much lower.

There are over 130,700 hectares of public, forested land, covering around 42% of the governorate. These forests are rich in raw materials, which after collection and transformation, have high economic value. There is also a large potential for eco-tourism in the region. In collaboration with in-country partner Mercy Corps, ROTA volunteers worked with a local Ain Draham community youth group, to develop and establish an eco-tourism trail. The ‘Ain Draham Trail’ will serve as a recreational attraction for visitors and tourists looking for a safe and enjoyable experience in nature, as well as offer a sustainable source of revenue for the local community.

Activities included, identifying locations and setting up signage for start and end points, waypoints, building bridges, kiosks, fences and rest areas in different locations within the forest using natural resources, information boards, as well as organising a formal launch for the trail. Essa Al Mannai, Executive Director, ROTA, said: “The International Volunteer Trips programme provides an extremely rewarding experience for our youth, who are given the opportunity to learn about a different culture and enhance their leadership and interpersonal skills. Returning home to Qatar, they serve as ROTA ambassadors who inspire other young people to play an active role in the development of their communities.”

Volunteer students also participated in a ‘Youth Social Entrepreneurship’ training workshop, facilitated by ROTA’s partner, Mercy Corps. Qatar University student, Thamer Jamal Saleh, said: “My time in Tunisia was truly a life-changing experience, which has taught me a great deal about the world around me. I witnessed first-hand some of the challenges facing youth in the Ain Draham community, and realised how invaluable our support is to ROTA’s beneficiaries. The trip has not only inspired me to offer support to those who are less fortunate abroad, but has also encouraged me to make a meaningful impact in my own community back home.”

ROTA’s international volunteer trips aim to promote cultural exchange, create a link between ROTA’s national and international initiatives, and build the capacity of volunteers and beneficiaries by raising awareness, developing skills and increasing engagement.

Under the patronage of its Chairperson, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums (QM) has signed MoU’s with Qatar University (QU), York University, a highly established organisation in the field of marine research, and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism in Italy. The agreements will allow the organisations’ to collaborate in a comprehensive study on Qatar’s marine features and underwater archeology.

The partnership will see QM lead a research project with a team of local and international marine archeology experts. The first of its kind in the region, the research will explore the archeological characteristics of Qatar’s underwater environment. In addition to the team of specialised experts, QM will invite relevant community members, such as Qatari divers, to take part and have the chance to experience and benefit from this significant social and scientific project.

There will also be several workshops and training programmes organised in collaboration with local schools and universities. This research project, which is due to start in the middle of this year, will run for almost five years. Through this project, QM aims to explore Qatar’s underwater environment to help reveal and understand how its marine history has contributed to the country’s social and economic behaviours. QM expects that this study will make new discoveries that will reveal many hidden secrets from the bottom of the sea, which was the region’s first source of income and a major route for commercial vessels.

Describing the importance of this project, Mansour bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, Chief Executive Officer and Special Advisor to H.E. the Chairperson, Qatar Museums, said: “This project perfectly reflects the leading role that QM is playing in protecting and promoting Qatar’s heritage.” Al Mahmoud also highlighted the uniqueness of this project, which is looking at underwater archeological sites instead of the usual on-land sites. He also stated that QM continues to support collaboration with high caliber institutions, such as York University and Qatar University, to help encourage knowledge transfer.

Describing the benefits of the project, Al Mahmoud added: “This study will help provide information and images of Qatar’s underwater ecosystem. It will build capabilities for those who are interested in working in the underwater archeological field, as it will contribute to world-class educational programmes. The research will be able to shed light on Qatar and the region’s history, and on the habits and traditions of our ancestors. This partnership brings QM closer to its goal of honouring the traditions of the past, while embracing the future.”

Dr Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham, President of Qatar University, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Qatar Museums and York University for this important initiative, that seeks to preserve a significant part of the country’s heritage, which will ultimately connect the future generations with the history of their country.” “Our experts at Qatar University, with their scientific capabilities and deep knowledge of Qatar’s history and heritage, are able to support this unique project to comprehensively research Qatar’s underwater archeology. The project will also enable us to find out more on Qatar’s marine environment, exploring an important aspect of the lifestyle of our ancestors, especially their connection to the sea, which they loved so much.”

Al Derham added: “Over the years, our QU Research Vessel ‘Janan’ has played an important role in conducting studies on the marine environment in Qatar. We expect this five-year project to be of great value to researchers and students. It will also be a strong addition to Qatar’s heritage.” The final report of this research study will include recordings on all the underwater archeological sites in Qatar, with their locations, access limits, and benefits. This will help build a foundation for studies on Qatar’s marine history and underwater archeology.

The findings of this study will also lead to establishing a digital archive on underwater cultural heritage sites, by carefully mapping the sites, using the most advanced remote sensor technology. This will help establish a digital library on underwater heritage sites and will support the development of marine heritage tourism. Besides the heritage aspect, the study will also provide information related to the nature of the current marine life in Qatar’s sea. This includes the distribution of coral reefs, identifying the most important fish and shells, as well as detecting the breeding and fishing seasons.

QM works hard to support its heritage pillar by cooperating with international experts, hosting international conferences, leading international partnerships and much more. This brings QM closer to its aim of preserving Qatar’s history and heritage and connecting today’s young generation with their great ancestors.

This is the first outreach event for the IPE Student Society and we are glad to find that it was a great success. Students from all the health-related colleges participated in this event along with their faculty members who we cannot thank enough for their continuous support. We all aim for a smoke-free society and we can only achieve this if we work together as a team. Again, on behalf of the society, thanks to everyone who made this event a big success.”

CPH Alumni Chapter President Oraib Abdallah said: “It is always important for alumni to maintain presence in health awareness campaigns. Such outreach activity offers a unique opportunity to allow them to be actively involved in the provision of public health care. As pharmacists, we should keep assisting smokers in quitting cigarettes and other smoking-related products to make our society free from tobacco use.” QPhUS President and 4th-year CPH student Amani Al Haddad said: “It touches me deep inside when I see the campaign that is used to be led by pharmacy societies only grows and involves students from all health majors in Qatar. Commenting on this achievement, QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham said: “Since its inception in 1977, Qatar University continues to serve as Qatar’s primary institution of higher education and as the fastest-growing university for research in the region. This significant success highlights the reputation that Qatar University has built over the years and the University’s ongoing efforts to advance its positioning in the international arena among the top universities in the world. The "QS Top 50 Under 50" 2018 ranking shows an improvement of the University’s last year performance as it was ranked #49 in 2016-2017.
