Qatar University (QU) research team has been ranked 1st and 2nd in the Real-time Summarization track at the 25th annual Text REtrieval Conference (TREC 2016) which was recently organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Maryland, USA.

The research team, which is led by Dr Tamer Elsayed (pictured), Assistant Professor of Computer Science at QU College of Engineering (CENG) and which included 2nd-year PhD student in Computer Science Maram Hasanain and 2nd-year MSc student in Computing Reem Suwaileh, has achieved the 1st place in the mobile notification task among 19 international teams, and the 2nd place in the email digest task among 15 international teams.  The competition in the Real-time Summarization track brought 19 research teams from universities and research labs in Qatar, Australia, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, India, and USA. QU team is the only team from an Arabic country to participate in the competition this year.

Qatar University team ranked 2 [qatarisbooming.com].jpgThe team developed a real-time software system that processes a stream of live tweets. The user of the system describes a topic of interest and the system notifies him/her whenever a novel and relevant tweet to the topic is posted. The system pushes the tweets to the user’s mobile (push notification task) or sends him/her an email of all interesting tweets at the end of the day (email digest task). More than 50 topics were tested during 10 days. The system’s output was judged accurately by a committee of judges from NIST.

Commenting on the team achievement, Dr Tamer Elsayed said: “We are proud of our students’ achievement, which is the result of their dedication and hard work. Being part of such an international competition is a motivating experience for our students and drives them to apply their skills beyond the classroom. This underlines our commitment to provide our students with opportunities to meet and interact with their peers and world-class researchers to share and advance their knowledge and research skills. It also demonstrates our continuous efforts to offer them a wide range of activities that unlock their potential and help them invest their talents in the spirit of competition, shared knowledge and teamwork.”

Maram Hasanain said: “It was a great honor to participate in a world-class competition like TREC. This helped me learn how to work under pressure and as an active player in a software development team.” Reem Suwaileh said: “Our participation in such a prestigious venue has several benefits. The major one is that we managed to prove to ourselves that if we are dedicated to our goals we are capable of achieving the best results.”

Three (3) 4th-year pharmacy students from Qatar University College of Pharmacy (QU-CPH) completed a training course in Scotland, UK as part of their Structured Practical Experience Placements (SPEP) program in CPH. One student trained at PAMIS, a community charity providing support for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), while two other students trained at Rowlands Pharmacy, one of the largest and longest established UK chain of local community pharmacies.

The trip is part of a collaboration which was established last year between CPH and Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University (RGU).

The students -- Nawal Bensmail, Noora Al Hamad and Amani Faisal Al Haddad -- completed a one-month rotation in Scotland. They spent their time shadowing the pharmacists, learning about pharmacy procedures for dispensing medications to patients as well as performing pharmacy administrative and legislation related tasks. Under the supervision of their preceptors, they provided direct care to patients including reviewing prescriptions and counseling patients about their medications. They also collaborated with RGU faculty and students.

The students also had the opportunity to meet with Lord Provost, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Queen’s Representative of Aberdeen with whom they discussed their academic journey at QU and Qatar’s developments in the recent years. CPH Dean Dr Mohammed Diab said: “The College of Pharmacy at Qatar University puts great emphasis on providing students with a wide range of learning opportunities and experiences to enrich their education. Maintaining strong relationships with our international partners allows our students to gain professional experience and enhance their education. It also provides them with an opportunity to network with their peers and mentors in the global professional community.”

QU underwater video survey studies the abundance of sharks and rays in Qatar’s coastal waters

A pioneering research project led by a team of Qatar University (QU) researchers and external collaborators is using underwater video to survey the abundance of sharks and rays in the coastal waters of Qatar.

Led by QU Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) Research Assistant Professor Dr J Jed Brown, a team of  researchers from QU and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) conducted a research project entitled “Underwater Video Survey of the Elasmobranchs of Qatar: A first step towards conservation”. The project is part of an agreement signed between CSD and AIMS in January 2017. It is funded by a QU internal grant awarded to Dr Brown and the Global FinPrint project -- a 3-year project sponsored by Microsoft Co-founder Mr Paul Allen to study tropical reef ecosystems for sharks and rays.

The team used Baited Remote Underwater Video Cameras (BRUVS) to study the abundance of sharks and rays in the coastal waters of Qatar. The BRUVS attract and record fish life in the immediate area. Additionally, one of the unique highlights of this study is that one of the camera systems that are being deployed is actually a 3D virtual reality camera housing, which houses six individual cameras. Footage from this camera housing can be viewed on virtual reality head-sets or other systems such as the virtual reality cave in QU virtual reality lab.

The team has completed over 100 deployments of the BRUVS in Northern and Southern Qatar. Preliminary results show that very few sharks and rays have been observed. However, the lack of observations is useful data in and of itself. It provides a baseline for future studies and may be a sign that sharks are no longer found in habitats where they should be due to overfishing or habitat destruction. Sharks and rays are of particular conservation concern due to their vulnerability to overfishing, and to their slow growth and reproductive rates, Dr Brown said, adding, “the research outcomes can be used to guide conservation and/or restoration efforts for vulnerable species, such as sawfishes, which have been heavily overexploited in the Gulf.”

He added: “This is one of QU’s research activities that highlights its core role in addressing important environmental issues. It also demonstrates QU’s commitment to knowledge-sharing and to providing expertise for multidisciplinary research, education and learning in line with its research priorities and in contribution to the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, the National Research Strategy, and other national development strategies.” AIMS Postdoctoral Research Scientist Dr Conrad Speed said: “We welcome these types of partnerships that help us carry out the Global FinPrint project. Working with collaborative institutions such as Qatar University has enabled us to gain local knowledge and expertise, which are invaluable to our research. We hope that this collaboration will foster additional research in the future and build local capacity for carrying out marine surveys using BRUVS in the Gulf.”

A large number of government officials, industry professionals, policymakers and academics were engaged in a “Roundtable on Energy and Economic Diversification Policies” on February 15-16.

Organized by Qatar Leadership Centre (QLC) in collaboration with Qatar University (QU), the Ministry of Energy and Industry, and the Baker Institute of Rice University, the event aimed to highlight and provide efficient solutions to the regional energy, economic and environmental challenges. The event’s program focused on four main themes “Energy Subsidy Reform”, “Economic Diversification in Energy Exporting Nations”, “The Energy-Food-Water Nexus”, and “Climate Change”.

In his remarks on behalf of QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham, QU Chief Strategy and Development Officer Dr Darwish Al-Emadi said: “The Baker Institute has a long and distinguished record of engaging with our region through critical analyses of the pressing issues that challenge both policymakers and the public. I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that the issues listed on today’s agenda are matters of existential importance. From economic diversification and subsidy reforms to the energy-food-water nexus and climate change, the sustainability of our way of life and indeed our very survival depend on the approach we take and the progress we make in managing our energy resources, and dealing with their social, economic, political, and environmental impacts. Indeed, the single most important lesson from the recent decline in oil prices may have been the need for new ways of thinking and innovative policymaking. Today’s agenda, for example, will be addressing subsidy reforms and other difficult, yet imperative, approaches to dealing with the consequences of declining oil prices in a region where more than 80% of revenue for some countries comes from oil.”

He added: “Qatar University has enjoyed a wide range of collaboration models with the energy sector, including industry chair positions, sponsorship of students, research funding and collaborations, student internships and training opportunities, and participation in program advisory boards. Together we have worked to provide students with educational and training opportunities that contribute to the energy sector and beyond. At the heart of our strategy is a focus on key attributes that will ensure that our graduates are ready for a fast-changing economic reality. We are re-thinking our programs to focus on producing students who are well-rounded, competent, entrepreneurial citizens prepared to be lifelong learners and who have a keen sense of their ethical and social responsibilities. To that end, our strategic plan is committed to making the academic and administrative investments needed to serve that outcome. At the same time that it serves as the main producer of the labor force, the University is also a think tank for the country and a reservoir of innovative research.”

QU College of Law Oil and Gas Law Assistant Professor and IRL Editor-in-Chief Dr Talal Abdulla Al-Emadi, who is also member of the organizing committee of the event, stressed the importance of energy for economic growth and the betterment of the standards of living. The energy sector faces numerous challenges at the global level, he said, adding, “The challenges facing the GCC region are ultimately linked to those in Asia, Europe, North America and Africa. This requires the setting up of common goals between nations and the implementation of a flexible approach to overcome the global energy challenge. This event provides a platform to discuss the global energy, economic and environmental challenges that are occurring in the region, the development and growth of Qatar’s economy, as well as the country’s role in addressing global energy needs and associated market challenges.”

QU CMED faculty discusses the involvement of neuroinflammation in neurodegeneration

Qatar University College of Medicine (QU-CMED) Professor of Biochemistry Prof Bared Safieh-Garabedian (pictured) was invited as a special speaker at the Joint Molecular Biosciences and Biomedicine Seminar Series, which was recently organized and hosted by Cardiff University School of Biosciences. Prof Bared gave a lecture entitled “Targeting unresolved neuroinflammation: Can Thymulin related peptide (PAT) come to the rescue?”.

Dr Bared noted that inflammation, as part of the innate immune response, plays an important role in homoeostatic processes such as tissue repair. He also noted that chronic inflammation is tightly linked to neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, and cancer. He explained that the non-resolution of inflammation has many causes, which are not clearly understood such as an uncontrolled production of proinflammatory mediators, a failed phenotypic switch in macrophage and T cell population, an inadequate production of resolution mediators, a persistent stimulation by microbes and allergens, and a prolonged or excessive response or  a subnormal response.

Over the last 20 years, the functional autonomy of the immune and nervous system has been challenged, Dr Bared said, adding, “The central nervous system (the brain) and the immune system are intimately linked and do not function as independent systems. During inflammation these interactions are more prominent. Understanding these pathways of communication has important clinical consequences for neurodegenerative diseases”. Furthermore, Dr Bared noted that the communication pathways between the immune and the nervous system are bidirectional, intricate and not well defined.

It is difficult to define physiological and behavioral signs of central nervous system (CNS) inflammation, Dr Bared said. He added: “Chronic hyperactivation of brain immune cells can result in neurotoxic actions due to excessive production of several pro-inflammation mediators.” He went on to discuss the importance of developing new animal models for neuroinflammation and during the talk he described one such model developed by his group.

Dr Bared stressed the importance of establishing and implementing new approaches such as elucidating inflammatory reactions in the CNS, identifying the main players that can act as therapeutic targets (microglial cells), determining biomarkers for disease such as cytokines and neurotrophic factors, and characterizing molecular targets such as blocking toll-like receptors (TLR) expressed in the CNS. Dr Bared went on to the discuss the development of the PAT with powerful anti-inflammatory actions. This molecule has been patented by his group and undergoing clinical trials. He discussed the potential use of this drug as a novel therapeutic agent for use in neurodegenerative diseases.
