KINDI Center for Computing Research at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) is developing two free online courses in cybersecurity with the aim to raise community awareness on issues related to cybersecurity in the Gulf region. The courses in Arabic and English -- Cyber Security in the Workplace, and Cyber Security in Daily Life -- are expected to be launched in March 2016. They were developed in conjunction with Open University (UK) and with the support of the UK Global Cyber Capacity Building Programme, and customized to address the needs of commercial organizations as well as the general population in the Gulf region.
The course on “Cyber Security in the Workplace” aims to improve learners’ practical skills in cybersecurity, and help them understand main concepts to improve security of their computing systems. The course includes 4 modules on key cybersecurity threats, regulations, laws and standards. The course on “Cyber Security in Daily Life” looks at ways to improve cybersecurity practices of the general public for daily-use of computing systems. It includes 6 modules focusing on privacy, ethical considerations and laws relevant to the public, as well as practical guidance on improving password security, protection against social engineering / phishing attacks, and how to respond to a cyber-attack.
CENG dean Dr Rashid Alammari said: “Cybersecurity is important and our shared responsibility -- whether it is in the workplace or in our daily personal life. In establishing these new courses, CENG is demonstrating its position as a leading partner in tackling emerging issues related to our connectedness as a society and beyond. Our students as well as the general public will benefit in no small measure from gaining skills and knowledge in cyber security as it will add value to their knowledge, academic and professional profiles and their future career prospects.”
KINDI director Prof Qutaibah Malluhi said: “As our lives increasingly depend on digital services, the need to protect our information from being maliciously disrupted or misused is really important. In this regard, cybersecurity has become a national priority for countries across the Gulf region, and empowering users with cybersecurity knowledge is a key part of national and regional cybersecurity strategies. By launching these online courses in cybersecurity, KINDI continues in its mission to serve the community and Qatar, and to promote quality programs in the area of computer and information sciences and engineering, in line with the country’s vision and aspirations.”
Project coordinator Dr Khaled Khan said: “The topics of the courses were carefully selected to benefit everyone regardless of their profession and educational background. The courses do not require any prior knowledge in computer science or security. They will help people in Qatar and the region protect their systems, their organizations and their societies.”
