The Times Higher Education today publishes the 2016 rankings of the world’s best universities in the BRICS and Emerging Economies*. Qatar makes its debut in the rankings with Qatar University included in the Top 100, in joint 90th position (=90th) and number one for international outlook. China dominates the rankings, with institutions occupying first and second places, half the Top 10 and 39 places in the Top 200. Taiwan comes a distant second with 24 universities in the Top 200 and India is the third best represented country. The 2016 rankings include 200 institutions from 35 countries, up from 100 from 18 countries in 2015.
Phil Baty, Times Higher Education World University Rankings editor says: “These rankings are based on the same established and trusted thirteen performance indicators used to create the annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but they are specially calibrated to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies. Qatar is represented in the BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings for the first time this year with Qatar University in the top half of the newly expanded top 200 list. This achievement is in part due to expanding the number of countries eligible for inclusion, but it also reflects the institution’s strong international outlook; Qatar University is number one when ranked on this criteria alone. It is great news that the university recognises the merit of attracting and collaborating with students and scholars from all over the planet.”
